I have been working on Frank AKA “The Monster” a lot lately. It is a very involved piece, I have had to do: sculpting, sewing, sheetmetal work, woodwork, drywall. When I started working on him he was just a head actually, I hadn’t conceived of a base at all. It has me thinking about the artistic process. I don’t really have a traditional one. I conceive of a piece in my head. I can see it in my minds eye and then I start building. This poses a lot of issues and I think takes a lot longer than it should. I frequently lurk about conceptart.org and the Massive Black site, I highly recommend them as inspirational sources. Tonight I stumbled upon this Youtube video.
Notice how deliberate everything he does is, each brush stroke is planned. I have always felt that my artwork unfolds in almost an accidental way. That it is the culmination of many unplanned acts that fortunately work together in the end. What if I were to add process and better planning to them would my artwork still be the same, would it be better, would it be worse? I am going to try and add more process to my process in the next year I think, we will see how that goes.

I ended up purchasing a watching the full Greg Manchess painting video last night. Probably the best 15$ I have spent on art technique. I actually ended up taking notes (a rare thing)

He offers many words of wisdom. His process is amazing. I am definitely going to rework how I do things.
That was a cool video! I see what you mean as far as being deliberate, but I also see the constant experimentation that happens as a work of art is being created.
Great post Grim…lots to think about.
